Regulation

How are functional drinks regulated?

Functional beverages sold in Australia and New Zealand are strictly regulated under the Food Standards Code. All functional beverages must display accurate nutrition information and ingredient lists, and any added vitamins, minerals or bioactive compounds must be permitted under the Code.

All claims on pack must be accurate and not misleading.

Vitamin B
Vitamin B is used to boost metabolism and generate energy. B vitamins help the body convert food into fuel and support normal nervous system function.
Other vitamins
Functional drinks are increasingly fortified with vitamins A, C, D, E and K to support immunity, skin health and energy.
Fibre
Fibre is a non-digestible plant carbohydrate. Fibre-enriched drinks offer a convenient way to boost daily fibre intake to support gut health, satiety and blood sugar regulation.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are molecules that neutralise free radicals, unstable molecules that can harm your cells. They’re commonly sourced from fruit, tea and botanical extracts.
Amino acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, used to slow fatigue and improve muscle function. Common examples in drinks include taurine and BCAAs.
Probiotics
Live microorganisms, often called ‘friendly’ bacteria or yeast, that provide health benefits, particularly for digestive and immune system health.
Prebiotics
Prebiotics are specialised, non-digestible plant fibres that act as food for good bacteria in the gut, promoting a healthy, balanced microbiome.
Minerals & electrolytes
Minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium support hydration, muscle function and the body’s electrolyte balance, especially during or after activity
